New Year, New Habits: Two Ways to Protect Your Brain in 2026

As we head into 2026, many of us are thinking about how to live a longer, healthier life. At the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, we want to help you focus on the goals that truly matter.

This year, let’s focus on “controlling the controllables.” Here are the two most important steps you can take to reduce your risk.

1. Quitting Smoking: Give Your Arteries a Break

Smoking is the biggest risk factor for both the growth and the rupture of a brain aneurysm. When you smoke, you aren’t just hurting your lungs; you are attacking your blood vessels from the inside.

How smoking puts you at risk:
  • Vessel Damage: Smoking damages the cells that line your blood vessels, making them weak and brittle.
  • Plaque Buildup: It raises “bad” fats (triglycerides) and lowers “good” cholesterol. This leads to a buildup of plaque, which narrows and thickens your arteries.
  • Secondhand Smoke: Even if you don’t smoke, breathing in someone else’s smoke interferes with how your heart and blood vessels work.

Your 2026 Goal: If you smoke, make this the year you quit. Avoiding smoke, both firsthand and secondhand, is one of the best ways to keep your blood vessel walls from weakening further.

2. Managing Hypertension: Lower the Pressure

Hypertension is just the medical term for high blood pressure.

Why blood pressure matters for rupture prevention: Think of your blood vessels like a balloon. If you keep pumping air in, the pressure makes the walls of the balloon thinner and thinner until it pops. High blood pressure does the same thing to your arteries. It puts constant stress on the vessel walls, making it much more likely that an aneurysm will form or that an existing one will rupture.

Your 2026 Goal: Get your blood pressure checked regularly. You can manage it by:

  • Eating less salt (sodium).
  • Staying active and moving more.
  • Taking any blood pressure medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes.

Start Your New Year with a Plan

We may not be able to control our genetics, but we can control how we treat our bodies. By quitting smoking and keeping your blood pressure in check, you are taking the lead in protecting your brain.
