Susan’s Story

December 24th changed my life forever.

Christmas Eve is usually a day filled with joy, warmth, and anticipation, but for me, it became the day my life took an unexpected turn.

December 24, 2020, remains etched in my memory.

That day, I felt an excruciating pain unlike anything I had ever experienced, as if a baseball bat had struck the back of my head. At first, I convinced myself it was another severe migraine. Unaware of the danger I was in, I drove myself to the hospital, trying to make sense of the unbearable pain. What I did not know was that my brain was bleeding and a fight for my life had already begun.

My Christmas miracle began when the medical team, despite my vague symptoms, quickly recognized the urgency of my condition. A scan revealed a significant brain bleed, and I was rushed to Philadelphia for specialized care.

The days that followed were filled with uncertainty, fear, and an overwhelming determination to survive. Two days later, I collapsed again and was rushed into life-saving surgery. During that critical time, my heart stopped twice as a result of the trauma my brain was enduring. Yet through the dedication of skilled doctors, and what I can only describe as divine intervention, I was brought back.

In the aftermath, doctors discovered a rare brain disorder that causes dangerous vasospasms: Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome, likely the trigger for my aneurysm. This discovery led me to a world-renowned neurosurgeon in New Brunswick NJ, whose expertise and compassion gave me both answers and hope. When further testing revealed another fusiform aneurysm, I found reassurance in knowing I was in capable hands.

Today, I live with what I lovingly call my “mental jewelry”—a unique and precious part of me that has even drawn the attention of leading neurosurgeons. My beautiful, broken brain continues to heal, and I have learned to embrace this journey with grace, strength, and gratitude.

Since 2010, my life has been defined by resilience.

I have faced extraordinary challenges: nearly losing my leg and enduring 19 surgeries to save it, undergoing life-saving neurosurgery on my neck to prevent paralysis, and surviving a ruptured brain aneurysm. In total, I have endured 22 surgeries. Through it all, I have learned that even in the darkest moments, there is always room for hope, love, and renewal.

Advocacy has now become a powerful purpose in my life—a way to shine a light on the realities of living with a brain aneurysm, the burden of medical debt, and the strength it takes to rebuild a life. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to discover their own resilience and to amplify the voices of those who feel unheard.

This chapter of my life is not defined by pain or hardship, but by the resilience, growth, and deep connection I have discovered along the way.

I move forward with a heart full of gratitude for the miracles—both big and small—that have carried me to this moment.
