Running Against Ruptures began out of a family’s devastating loss and a desire to turn that loss into something meaningful. In April 2013, Bob Wood passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from a ruptured brain aneurysm. In his memory, his family created Running Against Ruptures, a 2.5K walk and 5K run dedicated to raising awareness and funding critical brain aneurysm research.
The first Running Against Ruptures event was held in June 2015 in London, Ontario, Canada. What began as a way to honor Bob’s life and memory has grown into an annual tradition that brings together survivors, families, friends, and others whose lives have been touched by brain aneurysms.
Over the years, the event has become about much more than fundraising. It provides a place for members of the brain aneurysm community to meet, connect, share their experiences, and support one another. Through Running Against Ruptures, the Wood family has formed meaningful relationships with countless people affected by brain aneurysms in many different ways.
In June 2026, Running Against Ruptures celebrated its 12th consecutive year and raised more than $54,000 to support brain aneurysm research and awareness. The event continues to grow, with a dedicated committee now helping the family carry its mission forward. Since 2015, the event has raised over $340,000.
The Wood family remains honored to support the important work being done to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent brain aneurysm ruptures. As they look ahead to the 13th Running Against Ruptures, the year holds special significance: 13 was Bob’s lucky number, and he was born on August 13.
Each year, Running Against Ruptures keeps Bob’s memory alive while creating hope and connection for others. Through the Running Against Ruptures Chair of Research, that legacy will continue by helping fund research that can save lives and improve outcomes for those affected by brain aneurysms.
